Bunk, that's an excellent way of putting it. I get really tired of having to have an opinion about gods and religions rather than merely opting out completely. In this particular case, though, religion is so central to the novels that it's a bit of a cop-out to gloss over it.

As a non-religious person myself, I was perfectly happy with the decision to make the movie more anti-authoritarian than specifically anti-religious. I prefer to spend my time without religion rather than obsessing about opposing it.

I'd heard hints of Pullman's theology here and there. Pullman's concepts on a false god and hidden god aren't new, but they are forever interesting. This is Gnosticism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnosticism), and has been the big "mysterious" religion behind the Da Vinci code and numerous other conspiracy theory books. The big secret is that Jesus was actually a Gnostic, and Magdalene held special knowledge (the Gnostic part) that Peter didn't get. There are even transcendental versions, where the real god is actually less a Judeo-Christian god than the true self of everyone combined.

I'm glad I added this book to my Christmas list.
